Congresswoman Elise Stefanik presents First Place Ribbon

elise-stefanik.jpg

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik presents First Place Ribbon to Dylan Pasco of Glens Falls at the Backyard Maple Syrup Makers Tasting Contest, Hadley NY.  Maple syrup submitted was judged on its color, density and flavor by veteran maple producers, Ron Waite, Don Hastings and Andrew Gilbert.  Backyard maple syrup makers were to bring one-half pint of their finest syrup in a glass container to Wilder’s Sugar Shack, they are to gather and boil their own sap and to have 150 taps or less to be eligible to enter the contest.

Second place winner is Terry Shatraw, Corinth and third place winner is Eileen Gilbert, Hadley.  Other syrup makers receiving ribbons are: Marcia Gifford-Sorell, of Hadley, Brion Bevington, JR of Broadalbin, Tom Jenkin, and Rene Pasco both of Queensbury.

Despite the early morning cold and wind, people began arriving at 8 a.m. to enjoy a hearty Scholarship French toast breakfast, a festival tradition.  It was a very windy day, but that didn’t spoil the kind of good-natured, fun-filled attitude we have come to expect at the 17th annual Maple in April festival.

Over 50 vendors lined Rockwell Street and Stony Creek Road. There is something here for all age groups from maple “goodies” to a zebra.  You’ll find all kinds of tasty maple treats like maple cotton candy, maple popcorn, maple cheesecakes and delicious organic maple milk as well as great musical entertainment all day long.  Civil War re-enactors of the 118th Adirondack NY Infantry encamped on the festival grounds.  Vertical Farm’s zebra lead the pet parade, and Saratoga County Sheriff’s offered free child identification cards. Plein-air artists were peppered throughout the area painting scenes of the spring festival in preparation of the art auction. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik stopped in to say “HI” and to present the Backyard Maple Syrup Makers their award ribbons. JP Henderson of Crown Entertainment Professional DJ Service walked through the crowd announcing the various vendors along Rockwell Street and their crafts, in between announcing the vendors Henderson played a wide variety of tunes.  Because of the dip in the temperature, the wind and the promise of showers the ‘Lil’ sugar dust-off Car & Truck Show was cancelled, which always draws a crowd.  It is rescheduled for Friday, May 31. “It takes a lot of volunteers and countless hours to organize an event like this, said Sue Wilder, president of the Hadley Business Association. The H.B.A. really appreciates every ounce of effort that goes into this, every service group that participates, every festival attendee, and every local business that donates time and product to the success of the festival.”
